We have tried to gather a lot of information and summarize the key events for you, regarding to the data usage, spectrum auction and the technology or the disruption, which people in the telecommunication business should not be missed.

Growth in mobile phone number registration in 2018 is expected to be saturated, up only 2%. The downward trend is predicted to grow at a slower pace of 1% during 2019 to 2021.

The average data usage of Thai people is currently at 5 GB per person per month, up 25 times over the last 4 years. While the dtac’s customers consumed data usage at 6.3 GB per person on average based on monthly basis, which is 2.6 times higher than the previous six quarters.

In 2018, telecom industry is projected to grow by 5.3%, as the average of the year 2012-2016. It clearly indicates that service providers need to develop new channels on the digital platform.

2300 MHz frequency band is highly critical issue for dtac. It was selected by its preferred partner, TOT, to secure the right to use until 2025, with the concession fee of 4.5 billion baht and the construction of 20,000 relay tower stations.

On Dec 27, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) gave green light for the agreement, jointly made by TOT and dtac. The next process will be passed to the attorney-general for the approval.

37,457 million baht is the reserved price for the 1800 MHz frequency band and 37,988 million baht for the 900 MHz band. In the wake of Jasmine case in the last auctions, NBTC set a new rule to prevent the previous situation by increasing fines from 5% to 15% of the minimum bidding price. Jasmine failed to make a payment for spectrum acquisition, however, it’s remained to join the auction this time according to the NBTC. The auctions on 900 MHz and 1800 MHz are expected to be done by May 2018, to avoid the use of the remedy.

Another marketing innovation of dtac, by turning the telecommunication industry for the first time with the concept of “Flip it”. Life is easy, no need to stick with the problem of FUP (Fair Usage Policy), slipping away with the unlimited use.
